Captain Disaster turns him into a soccer-team captain. Later books bring in video-game obsession, fear, sickness, and friendship trouble.

What makes the series work is that the science never feels glued on. It is part of the world. Mitosis can become a video game obsession. A hydra can be a camp problem. A disease scare can fuel both panic and laughs. Readers pick up real bits of biology almost by accident, which is part of the charm.

The books also include a comic-within-the-comic featuring Super Amoeba. That running parallel between Squish's life and his hero fantasies gives the series extra shape. Sometimes it is a joke. Sometimes it quietly underlines the moral choice Squish is facing.

The tone is very accessible for younger graphic novel readers. There is a lot of slapstick, a lot of ooze, and a lot of kid-friendly snark. But the stories are never only random silliness.
