Spider Books in Order

The Spider books center on a vampire who is not exactly noble, but is not content to stay a straight-up monster, either. That tension is the whole engine of the series. Spider has blood on his hands, a talent for trouble, and a grudging impulse to help people who are in worse shape than he is.

That last part keeps getting him into bigger disasters.

The series blends urban fantasy, horror, and a sly sense of humor. Spider is dangerous, but he is also self-aware enough to know how ridiculous some of his situations are. He is the kind of character who can move through cult plots, black magic, undead outbreaks, and crooked human schemes without ever losing the rough edge that makes him interesting.

Parker Cole becomes an important part of the emotional center. In Spider Web, for example, Spider follows her onto a cruise after her demonic-possession ordeal, only to get pulled into a fight over a cursed relic and a witch doctor who can turn a ship full of passengers into zombies. That tells you a lot about the series in one shot. The books like big pulp setups, but they keep the stakes personal.

There is also a redemption thread running underneath the action. Spider has done bad things. He knows it. Later books push harder on the question of whether someone like him can ever balance the scale, especially once love gets involved and old sins start circling back.

Expect vampires, occult menace, fast plotting, and a lead who is more entertaining because he is never fully cleaned up. These books are not trying to make the undead elegant. They are trying to make them fun, messy, and dangerous.

If you like paranormal series with bite, attitude, and just enough heart to keep the bloodletting from turning empty, Spider is one of the livelier places to start.
