A Spear of Summer Grass

by Deanna Raybourn

2013

After a scandal in Paris, glamorous Delilah Drummond is exiled to her stepfather's remote Kenyan estate to let gossip die down. There she plunges into the gin soaked expat world, clashes with enigmatic guide Ryder White, and faces a murder that forces real change.

Series background & context

The books grouped under A Spear of Summer Grass take readers to colonial Kenya in the early 1920s, where the landscape is beautiful, dangerous, and morally complicated. At their center is Delilah Drummond, a glamorous American socialite whose scandals finally catch up with her.

In the prequel novella Far in the Wilds we meet big game guide Ryder White, a Canadian who has remade himself on the African savannah. Hired to lead a European prince on a leopard hunt, Ryder navigates both physical peril and the boredom and arrogance of certain white settlers, learning again how easily violence can flare in a place where life is cheap for some and priceless for others.

A Spear of Summer Grass opens in 1923, when Delilah is sent into informal exile after a particularly ugly incident in Paris. To let the gossip cool, her family packs her off to Fairlight, a once grand but now fading estate near Lake Wanyama that belongs to her beloved stepfather. There she finds a hard drinking expat community that makes even her look tame, and a countryside that refuses to be tamed at all.

Delilah arrives expecting distraction and discreet affairs, and she certainly finds both, but Africa forces her to confront the cost of her choices. The landscape delivers splendor and shock in equal measure, from early morning safaris and red dust storms to sudden, brutal deaths. Her prickly connection with Ryder White, who knows the land far better than the society crowd, becomes one of the threads pulling her toward real change.

At the same time, a violent act on and around Fairlight exposes simmering tensions among settlers, local communities, and Delilah's own circle. The mystery element turns on who is willing to kill to protect their secrets and their place in this uneasy colonial hierarchy. Delilah's search for answers forces her to decide what, and who, is truly worth fighting for.

Taken together, Far in the Wilds and A Spear of Summer Grass offer a Jazz Age blend of romance, self discovery, and murder against richly described Kenyan backdrops. They are ideal if you like flawed heroines, morally grey love interests, and historical novels that are as interested in character as they are in setting.
