Doctor in Petticoats

by Mary Connealy

2010

Series background & context

Sophie's Daughters picks up threads from Lassoed in Texas and Montana Marriages and hands them to the next generation. The series follows three of Sophie McClellan’s grown daughters as they strike out into the wider West with medical kits, rifles, and a knack for landing in the middle of trouble.

In Doctor in Petticoats, Beth McClellan returns from medical training back East determined to practice as a doctor in the rugged West. A stagecoach accident throws her together with a gifted but broken doctor who’s drowning his past in alcohol. Their journey toward healing—physical, emotional, and spiritual—runs alongside shootouts and frontier emergencies.

Wrangler in Petticoats centers on Sally, a crack shot and tomboy whose trip to visit family in Montana goes violently wrong when outlaws ambush her party. Left for dead, she’s rescued by a quiet artist painting in the Rockies. As Sally recovers, the two have to dodge returning killers and figure out how a woman who lives in buckskins and a man who lives with canvases could ever build a life together.

In Sharpshooter in Petticoats, Mandy is holed up in a ridiculous castle of a house built by her late husband, determined to keep her children safe behind thick stone walls. An old love storms back into her life just as danger closes in, and she has to choose between clinging to isolation or stepping back into a world that once hurt her.

Together, these books feel like a rowdy family reunion laced with gunpowder. They’re especially satisfying if you’ve read the earlier Texas and Montana books, but they also stand alone as stories about capable women learning that needing help doesn’t make them weak.
