Author bio

Sophie Barnes was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and spent much of her childhood moving from country to country with her family. She has said she lived in six countries on three continents, and she spent ten years of her childhood in the south of Spain. That sense of movement shows up all through her fiction, which is full of grand houses, layered settings, and characters trying to work out where they belong.

She also grew up around several languages. Barnes has said she speaks English, Danish, French, Spanish, and Romanian with varying degrees of fluency. That wide, cross-border background helps explain why her books often feel both polished and slightly restless, even when they stay inside the familiar frame of Regency romance.

Before writing became her career, she studied fashion design in Paris and New York. Later, while living in Ghana with her husband and young children, she found herself needing a creative outlet during nap times and day care hours. Writing began as something she had long imagined doing one day for fun, but it quickly turned into much more than a pastime.

A bookstore trip helped set the course.

Barnes has said that finding Julia Quinn’s Romancing Mister Bridgerton in a shop in Accra pushed her toward historical romance. She began with a different project in mind, realized the research felt overwhelming, and turned instead to a story powered more by imagination. When she sold her first novel to Avon Impulse, she finally felt like a real writer rather than someone with a hobby.

Her debut, How Miss Rutherford Got Her Groove Back, introduced the kind of story she still does well: a heroine in emotional trouble, a hero who looks steady until he is not, and a plot that mixes wit with real feeling. Books like Lady Alexandra’s Excellent Adventure and The Trouble with Being a Duke followed soon after, helping establish her as a writer readers turn to for lively historical romance with a strong sense of momentum.

Barnes likes characters who do not fit neatly.

That runs through series such as Secrets at Thorncliff Manor, The Crawfords, and Diamonds in the Rough. Her dukes and earls matter, of course, but so do governesses, widows, surgeons, writers, and women trying to build lives with more freedom than society thinks they should want. Readers who enjoy her books often point to that mix of comfort and friction. The settings are romantic and familiar, but the people inside them are usually pushing against expectation.

She also tends to write couples who have to earn their happy ending. A past scandal, a hidden identity, a money problem, a family duty, or a plain old stubborn streak usually stands in the way. Again and again, her stories return to second chances, honesty, independence, and the quiet work of trust.

Over the years she has written across a wide stretch of romance, from early series and Christmas novellas to later books like Her Scottish Scoundrel and A Duke’s Guide to Romance. She has also tried other directions, including the time-slip novel The Girl Who Stepped Into the Past. Her books have been published internationally in multiple languages, and the throughline is easy to spot: she likes heart, tension, and people brave enough to step outside the role written for them.

When she is not writing, Barnes spends time with her family, practices yoga, bakes, gardens, watches romantic comedies, and reads. She has described herself as a romantic, which tracks. This is, after all, the writer who married the same man three times, in three different countries and in three different dresses.
