Series background & context
Sons of Somerset is a multi-author Regency series with a slightly different angle from the usual ballroom-heavy setup. The heroes here are working men.
That shift changes the feel of the stories in a good way. Rank still matters, of course, but jobs, training, money, and usefulness matter just as much. The men are not idle ornaments. They are stable masters, painters, surgeons, and other figures whose work shapes both their identity and the plot.
Stockton's novel in the series is An Agreeable Alliance. Her hero, Jared Cooper, is a surgeon, and that practical role is built right into the romance. Rebecca Turner needs medical help for her mother and cannot easily pay for it. Jared needs a way to court the woman he thinks he wants. Their agreement, and the letters that follow, create a setup that is both emotional and plainspoken.
That is a good example of what makes the series appealing. These books still deliver Regency romance, but they keep one foot in everyday labor and material reality.
If you enjoy historical love stories where class is present but work is equally important, Sons of Somerset offers a nice change of pace.
