Sonja Yoerg Books in Order

Sonja Yoerg grew up in Stowe, Vermont, in a family that mixed outdoor life with books. Her father taught skiing and tennis, her mother had been a school teacher, and reading was part of everyday life. Yoerg has described herself as a first-generation American, and that sense of place, family, and close looking runs through both her science writing and her novels. Vermont shows up often in her work, not as postcard scenery, but as lived-in ground.

As a teenager, she waitressed at the Trapp Family Lodge to help pay for college. She has shared one especially memorable detail from those years, Maria von Trapp gave her a cuckoo clock for her sixteenth birthday. After high school she studied psychology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, then went on to earn a Ph.D. in Biological Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley.

Before fiction, Yoerg worked as an animal behaviorist. She studied how animals learn, adapt, and solve problems, in settings that ranged from research environments to fieldwork, and she has written about working with species such as blue jays, hyenas, and kangaroo rats. Her first book, Clever as a Fox, came out in 2001 and looks at animal intelligence, instinct, memory, and the very human habit of ranking other minds.

Then she changed lanes.

Yoerg has said she began writing full-time when her daughters were heading to college. The shift from science writing to fiction makes a lot of sense once you read her novels. She is still interested in behavior, only now the questions are about families, guilt, loyalty, secrecy, and the stories people tell themselves to get through the day. Her fiction debut, House Broken, arrived in 2015 and centers on a veterinarian, Geneva Novak, who understands animals far better than she understands her own difficult mother.

From there she built a strong run of standalone novels. The Middle of Somewhere sends a troubled woman into the Sierra wilderness, where a long hike turns into both reckoning and danger. All the Best People returns to Vermont for a story about mental illness, inherited fear, and the damage done when families hide the truth. True Places begins with a woman finding a starving teenage girl near the Blue Ridge Parkway, then uses that startling meeting to ask bigger questions about comfort, motherhood, and where a person really belongs.

What carries across all of them is attention to behavior, why people do what they do, and what it costs them.

Later books show the same curiosity in different forms. Stories We Never Told leans into psychological suspense, following a professor whose interest in her ex-lover's new relationship turns obsessive. The Family Ship widens the frame again, following the Vergennes family on the Chesapeake in 1980 as love, grief, and responsibility pull everyone in different directions. Along the way, Yoerg has found a wide readership. True Places was an Amazon First Reads pick and became a Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestseller, and Stories We Never Told was also selected for Amazon First Reads.

She lives with her husband in Virginia, near the Blue Ridge Mountains. She has written that when she is not working, she runs, gardens, cooks, eats well, and enjoys wine. That mix feels fitting. Her books are serious about people, but they are also deeply interested in the texture of ordinary life.
