Series background & context

The Songs of Rebellion series begins with a story that treats romance and political crisis as inseparable. In Ballad of Discord, Elizbeth McKinley's father throws his family into danger by joining a reckless bid for the Scottish crown. That single act breaks the ordinary future his daughters expected and leaves them exposed to exile, coerced marriages, and enemies they barely understand.

The tension here is not just external. Elizbeth already loves a man who ought to help her, and his refusal to believe she is truly in danger cuts as deeply as the larger conspiracy around them. That gives the story a useful emotional sharpness. Trust is not an ornament added to the romance. It is the whole problem.

The setting matters too. Scotland is not just wallpaper in this kind of book. Questions of allegiance, inheritance, national identity, and outside interference shape every choice. The series name hints at that wider pressure. These are stories about private lives caught inside public unrest.

So if you come here expecting a light courtship, adjust a little. The appeal is in the mix of rebellion, family peril, and love tested under strain. It is historical romance with a stronger taste for danger than comfort.
