Solom Books in Order

The Solom books are steeped in Appalachian atmosphere. They are set in a rural mountain community where family history, religious folklore, and old land all seem to hold memory. What starts as a move to a quieter life quickly becomes something much stranger and more dangerous.

In The Scarecrow, Katy relocates Jett to Solom after marrying Gordon Smith, a professor with deep roots in the area. The farm should feel like a fresh start. Instead it feels watched. Gordon's first wife may still haunt the house. The family history is full of bad death and unfinished faith. Local legend says the Horseback Preacher, Harmon Smith, still rides. And then there is the scarecrow, one of those perfect horror images that is creepy before it ever moves.

What Nicholson does well here is blend domestic unease with folklore. Katy is not just fighting a ghost or a curse. She is trying to protect her daughter, understand her husband, and figure out whether the place itself is shaping the people inside it. Jett's age matters too. The series often feels like it is looking at inheritance, what parents pass down, what children absorb, and how family stories become traps.

The Narrow Gate and The Preacher widen the conflict after violence tears the family apart. Katy inherits more than property. She inherits responsibility for staying in a place that may never let outsiders live in peace, while Jett becomes increasingly important to the old supernatural pattern binding Solom together.

These books move like supernatural thrillers, but they are really anchored in mood. Goats shift restlessly. The dead do not stay done. Town belief can protect or menace. The land is beautiful, but it never feels neutral.

If you want Nicholson at his most Appalachian, with mothers and daughters, farm roads, old sermons, and local legend rising into full-blown horror, Solom is one of his strongest homes.
