Series background & context

The Smith Mountain Lake books are tied together first by place. Cooper uses the Virginia lake setting as more than a pretty backdrop. It is where people come to fall in love, come back to recover, and sometimes return because life has left them with nowhere else to sort themselves out. The tone across the series is tender, scenic, and quietly emotional, with each book focusing on a different couple and a different kind of second chance.

Blue Wide Sky begins with first love. Gabby Hayden is sixteen and much more interested in water-skiing, her dog, and time on the lake with her dad than in boys, until Sam Tatum changes the shape of her world. The book has the sweep and ache of early love, and because the setting is so open and sunlit, the loss that follows lands even harder.

Dragonfly Summer shifts into an older, sadder place. Keegan Monroe leaves Los Angeles for Smith Mountain Lake after realizing how badly her life has gone off course, especially where her children are concerned. Bowie Dare, a former FBI agent turned writer, carries his own weariness into the story. Together they give the series a more mature, healing-centered feel. The lake becomes a place of retreat, but also a place where people can no longer keep pretending they are fine.

Fences leans into old betrayal and the damage time can do. Tate Callahan comes back to Smith Mountain Lake convinced that the love he once believed in with Jillie Andrews was broken beyond repair. The book is full of memory, misunderstanding, and the emotional defenses people build to protect themselves from being hurt again. It is also one of the clearest examples of how the series uses return as a plot engine. Leaving matters here, but coming back matters even more.

Then The Strawberry Field extends the series' interest in healing into a newer stage of life. Dr. Sawyer Berkley arrives at the lake carrying grief and professional doubt after a devastating medical crisis, and Jake offers the kind of grounded steadiness Cooper often gives her wounded characters. That keeps the series feeling connected even as the casts change.

So this is not a same-couple saga. It is a place-based series where Smith Mountain Lake itself does some of the connective work. Expect heartfelt romance, strong emotional resets, and a setting that keeps reminding characters that life can look different when they finally slow down long enough to see it.
