The First Pour

by Ellie Alexander

2023

This print collection gathers three Sloan Krause shorts, Hold on for Beer Life, A Brew to a Kill, and Ale I Want for Christmas is a Clue. It is a quick, frothy trio of cases set around Leavenworth and Nitro.

Series background & context

The Sloan Krause mystery shorts take everything that works in the full-length Leavenworth books and compress it into brisk, satisfying little pours. You still get Sloan, Garrett, Nitro, and the Bavarian village atmosphere, but the stories move faster and usually hinge on a single event, a holiday, a festival, a brewery opening, a date night, the kind of occasion that should be fun and relaxing until someone spoils it with deceit or death.

That shorter format changes the feel in a good way. The full novels spend more time on Sloan's family history, business pressures, and the ongoing reshaping of her life after leaving the Krause family brewery. The short stories and novellas keep those relationships in place, but they focus more tightly on one complication and one burst of trouble. That makes them good for readers who already know the world and want a little extra time with the characters between the bigger books.

They are quick, but they do not feel throwaway.

Because the setting is already so well established, Alexander can drop straight into the good stuff, a romantic outing going sideways, a festive market hiding a darker problem, an influencer's visit ending badly, a holiday celebration with a suspicious clue buried under the cheer. The brewery details, town personality, and Sloan's voice do a lot of work fast, so the stories still feel like part of the same lived-in series rather than bonus material from a separate shelf.

Garrett is especially well served by the shorter format. Some of these stories let readers spend more time with the rhythm between him and Sloan, which adds a nice personal layer without slowing the mystery. If you enjoy cozy series not just for the murders but for the relationships, these shorts are an easy sell.

The collection The First Pour makes the most sense as an entry point to this side of the series because it gathers several of the shorter cases in one place. That said, the individual novellas also work well as quick visits back to Leavenworth when you want the same beer-town atmosphere in a single sitting.

Expect the same blend of brewing culture, regional charm, and low-key danger that defines the main series, just on a smaller scale. These stories are like a sampler flight: different moods, same house style, and a good reminder of why the Sloan Krause world is such an inviting one to return to.
