Slacker

by Gordon Korman

2016

Cameron Boxer would rather game than do anything else, until he nearly lets his house burn down. To look responsible, he invents a fake community-service club, but everyone believes it, and Cam is stuck leading real missions, starting with saving a beaver named Elvis.

Series background & context

The Slacker books follow Cameron Boxer, a kid with big gaming skills and near-zero interest in real-life responsibility. Cam would happily spend his entire life in his basement, except real life keeps barging in, especially after he gets into trouble that he can’t talk his way out of.

His solution is classic Cam: fake it.

In Slacker, Cam invents a community-service club to impress adults and reduce punishment, but the fake club becomes real, and suddenly he’s expected to lead actual good deeds. The humor comes from Cam trying to keep up with a story he started, while his friends, and the whole town, take it seriously. Along the way, Cam discovers that doing something that matters feels different than leveling up in a game.

The follow-up, Level 13, keeps Cam’s voice and energy but shifts the challenge. Cam wants to go bigger in the gaming world, and the pressure to prove himself ramps up. The book plays with the tension between online ambition and real-world consequences, especially when Cam’s choices start affecting other people.

Cam is sarcastic, stubborn, and weirdly likable.

These books work for readers who enjoy modern school comedy, lots of dialogue, and plots that start with a bad decision and then refuse to calm down. If you want to read in order, start with Slacker and then move to Level 13 to follow Cam’s next attempt to game the system, and what it costs when the system games back.
