Everlost

by Neal Shusterman

2006

Killed in a car crash, Nick and Allie wake up in Everlost, a shadowy world between life and death where only children exist. Guided by a boy named Lief, they navigate ghostly landmarks, a ruthless “mother” of lost souls, and the monster McGill as they search for a way to truly move on.

Series background & context

The Skinjacker trilogy takes place in Everlost, a strange limbo that lies between life and whatever comes after. It begins with a car accident that should have killed two teenagers, Nick and Allie. Instead, they wake up in a ghostly version of the world, where colors are muted, adults are absent, and the living cannot see them.

In Everlost, children and teens who “got lost on the way to the light” become Afterlights. They look just as they did at the moment of their death, right down to chocolate stains or torn clothes. The ground beneath their feet is dangerous. Stand in one place too long, and you slowly sink toward the Earth’s core unless you are on a “deadspot,” a place where someone died that has crossed into Everlost along with them.

Everlost introduces this unsettling landscape. Nick and Allie fall in with Lief, a boy who has been stuck in a ghost forest for decades, and later with Mary Hightower, a self‑appointed “mother” of lost children who holds court in the twin towers that still stand tall in Everlost. Mary writes books of advice about how Afterlights should live, but her warm surface hides a fierce need for control. A monstrous figure called the McGill roams the limbo seas, capturing souls. As Nick and Allie grow, they begin to question whether staying in Everlost forever is really kindness.

In Everwild, the stakes rise. Nick, now known as the Chocolate Ogre, travels on a ghost train determined to help Afterlights move on into the light. Allie, who has discovered she can “skinjack” by possessing the living, journeys with Mikey McGill, the former monster now trying to reclaim his humanity. They encounter other skinjackers and learn that those with Allie’s gift might not be dead at all. Mary, threatened by Nick’s mission, turns more ruthless in her efforts to keep children bound to her.

Everfound brings everything to a head. Mary’s followers set in motion a plan that could destroy the living world so that all children will join her in Everlost. New characters like Jix, who can possess animals, and Clarence, an adult “scar wraith” whose touch can extinguish Afterlights forever, join forces with Nick, Allie, and Mikey. The final confrontation unfolds at a ghostly version of the Trinity test site, tying the rules of this afterlife to one of history’s most destructive inventions.

Throughout the trilogy, Shusterman blends creepy imagery, adventure, and philosophical questions. The books probe what it means to let go, how leaders can twist good intentions, and why clinging to comfort can sometimes be the most dangerous choice. While the setting is fantastical, the emotions are grounded, making this series a compelling read for fans of inventive, slightly eerie fantasy.
