The Sisters of Wyoming books are frontier sagas with a strong pair of heroines at the center. Rebecca and Katie are sisters who have already lost plenty before the story truly gets moving. Their mother is gone, their father is sick, and survival depends on pushing forward through the West even when the odds look terrible.

The opening setup is rough and memorable. In Sisters of the Wyoming Mountains, the sisters are hauling their father in a Mormon handcart through the Wasatch after the collapse of their California Gold Fields life. From there the books widen into a much bigger story involving polygamist power, Fort Bridger, the building of the transcontinental railroad, frontier medicine, ranching, and the social changes that helped make Wyoming the first place where women won the vote.

Rebecca and Katie want different futures, and that difference gives the series most of its force. Rebecca is drawn toward healing and the long fight to be taken seriously in a man's profession. Katie is tougher in a different way, determined to build real economic power through sheep ranching. Neither dream fits neatly into the narrow roles the period offers them.

That is where a lot of the tension comes from. These books are full of romance, danger, and large personalities, but underneath all of that is a steady argument about independence. What does it take for a woman to own land, practice medicine, choose a husband, or refuse the wrong one? McCarthy keeps returning to those questions through both sisters.

The villains and obstacles are not small either. A powerful polygamist hangs over the story. Social prejudice does too. So does the simple brutality of travel, weather, and frontier isolation. The scale is broad, but the emotional stakes stay personal because Rebecca and Katie are always trying to protect family while also claiming lives of their own.

If you like western historical fiction with strong women, big landscape, and plenty of plot, this series delivers. It is interested in romance, certainly, but it is just as interested in work, law, and the hard business of making room for yourself in a world built to close ranks against you.
