Series background & context
The Sisterhood series is Fern Michaels’ long-running set of revenge-driven thrillers built around seven women who refuse to let cruelty slide. It starts with Weekend Warriors, when a group of friends rally around Myra Rutledge after her daughter’s death and decide the courts aren’t enough. Their base is Myra’s peaceful Virginia estate, a place that doubles as planning room and safe haven.
The women come from very different corners of life, but they share the same hard-earned belief: some people get away with things because they know how to work the system. So the Sisterhood builds a system of their own. Each book gives them a new mission, sometimes personal, sometimes taken on for someone who has nowhere else to turn.
Their weapon is planning.
The Sisterhood doesn’t just charge in. They do the homework, surveillance, finances, legal angles, and the kind of creative misdirection that leaves a target with no easy way out. A lot of the fun is in the teamwork and the competence, plus the small rituals that keep them grounded, like meeting around the kitchen table to argue through the details and check each other’s blind spots.
As the series grows, the stakes get bigger. The Sisterhood attracts allies, including the partners who later step forward in the Men of the Sisterhood books. Their off-the-books justice also puts them on powerful people’s radar, pulling them into more official, more dangerous territory. The women have to learn how to stay one step ahead, even when the people they challenge have money, lawyers, and friends in high places. Later installments can feel like high-level covert operations, but the heart stays the same: someone got hurt, the system failed, and the Sisterhood refuses to shrug.
The tone is fast and plotty, with a strong undercurrent of friendship. Michaels keeps the focus on momentum rather than graphic violence. Even when the villains are truly ugly, the books lean toward satisfying consequences, not misery. Characters return over and over, and watching their lives expand, new relationships, new responsibilities, is part of the reward for reading in order.
If you’re new, start at the beginning so you can see how the women meet and why the rules of their world matter. By the time you get to later titles like 19 Yellow Moon Road and Tick Tock, the Sisterhood feels less like a secret club and more like a force with a history, a code, and a lot of unfinished business.
