Series background & context

The Singular Menace trilogy is Sandford’s foray into young adult thriller territory, co-written with journalist and screenwriter Michele Cook. The books follow sixteen-year-old Shay Remby, a runaway who lands in Los Angeles with almost no money, a handmade knife, and one goal: find her older brother Odin.

Odin is a gifted but reckless hacker who helped a group of radical animal-rights activists break into a lab run by the Singular Corporation. The raid went bad, but he escaped with a badly scarred dog and some stolen data that points to terrifying experiments on both animals and humans. When Shay gets a panicked late-night call and a visit from Singular’s security team, she realizes her brother is in mortal danger.

Uncaged throws Shay together with a loose crew of street kids, artists, and fellow activists who occupy an abandoned warehouse and slowly turn into a makeshift family. As they hide the dog and decode Odin’s files, they uncover hints of memory implants, brain-mapping, and powerful people willing to erase anyone who knows too much.

In Outrage and Rampage the fight spreads. The group rescues more victims of Singular’s experiments, including a girl carrying fragments of a senator’s memories, and takes their evidence public. Each step forward forces them to go on the run, hack deeper into corporate networks, and decide how far they’re willing to go when people they love are killed to keep the project quiet.

Compared with the adult series, these books move faster and lean harder on high-tech conspiracies and found-family dynamics. You still get Sandford’s interest in procedure—phone traces, hidden cameras, underground clinics—but seen through teenagers who improvise with whatever tools, skills, and allies they can scrape together. The result reads like a road-movie chase stitched to a biotech nightmare, with just enough humor and romance to keep the darkness from overwhelming the story.
