Author bio

Simon McCleave writes crime fiction that lives and breathes the landscapes of Wales. His series take readers from the slate villages and mountains of Snowdonia to the shores of Anglesey, following detectives who are as scarred and stubborn as the places they work.

He grew up in South London and, after university, headed into television and film development rather than straight into novels. That decision shaped everything that came after, giving him years of practice in spotting what makes a story move and why characters feel real.

Before publishing fiction, McCleave worked behind the scenes as a script editor at the BBC and a producer at Channel 4, then crossed the Atlantic to work as a story analyst in Los Angeles. Along the way he was involved with projects like The Full Monty and the BBC crime drama Between the Lines, and went on to write for series including Silent Witness, Murder in Suburbia, Teachers, Attachments, The Bill and EastEnders, as well as the Channel 4 film Out of the Game, which drew praise for its tough look at male friendship.

Those years in TV left their mark. His books favour tight scenes, sharp dialogue and twists that arrive exactly when a viewer—or reader—might start to feel safe. You can feel the influence of crime drama in the way he cuts between police work, suspects’ lives and the personal fallout for his detectives.

In January 2020 he released The Snowdonia Killings, the first novel featuring London detective Ruth Hunter, who relocates to rural North Wales hoping for a quieter life and instead finds a series of brutal murders. The book quickly climbed to the top of the UK ebook charts, selling well over 400,000 copies and launching a long‑running Snowdonia series that has now sold more than three million copies worldwide.

The DI Ruth Hunter Crime Thrillers stay close to the realities of policing while digging into long memories, local grudges and the way national issues—trafficking, corruption, organised crime—hit small communities. A continuing thread follows Ruth’s grief over her missing partner and her attempt to build a new life in North Wales.

McCleave has also created the Anglesey series, centred on DI Laura Hart, a former hostage and crisis negotiator whose family tragedy leaves her wary of getting close to anyone. These books lean into high‑stakes, high‑pressure investigations—boat hijackings, cold cases tied to the Real IRA, serial killings on the island’s coastline—set against the sea, tides and tight‑knit villages of Anglesey.

For readers who want to know who Ruth Hunter was before Snowdonia, the DC Ruth Hunter Murder File prequels return to late‑1990s London. As a young detective constable, Ruth tackles politically sensitive murders linked to Bosnian war crimes, post‑war gangland feuds, abuse in the film industry and a toxic culture inside a British Army barracks, often finding that the real battle is with the institutions meant to deliver justice.

More recently, McCleave has begun the Frank Marshal Crime Thriller series, following a retired detective turned park ranger in Snowdonia who is caring for a wife with dementia. Frank is older, dogged and quietly angry, drawn back into investigations with the help of his friend Annie, a retired judge, in books like Marshal of Snowdonia, False Witness and Deadly Care.

Alongside the series he’s written psychological “destination thrillers” such as Last Night at Villa Lucia, set in a Tuscan villa, and Five Days in Provence, which strands a group of old friends in the aftermath of a fatal hike. These standalones keep his taste for twisty plotting but shift the focus to enclosed groups, shifting loyalties and long‑buried secrets.

McCleave now lives in North Wales with his wife and their two children, writing full time and drawing daily on the mountains, coast and weather around him. His DI Ruth Hunter novels are in development for television, with filming planned in North Wales, and he continues to release several new books a year across his different series.
