Author bio
Sidney Sheldon (1917–2007) lived a life that was just as dramatic and compelling as one of his famous novels. Born Sidney Schechtel in Chicago, Illinois, his journey to becoming one of the world's most successful storytellers was anything but easy. He grew up deep in the struggles of the Great Depression, a time that shaped his work ethic and his resilience.
To help support his family, he hustled through a variety of odd jobs. He worked as a delivery boy for a drugstore and spent long nights checking coats at a cloakroom. The pressure of poverty took a heavy toll. At seventeen, staring down a future that looked incredibly bleak, he nearly took his own life. This was a pivotal moment in his battle with bipolar disorder, a personal struggle he would later discuss with great openness and honesty.
Fortunately, writing became his escape. It was the lifeline that pulled him out of Chicago, first to New York and eventually to the glamour of Hollywood.
Long before he ever saw his name on a book jacket, Sheldon was a massive success in the entertainment industry. It is rare for a writer to conquer even one medium, but Sheldon managed to conquer three. He won an Academy Award for his original screenplay of The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer. He took on Broadway and won a Tony Award for the musical Redhead.
Then, he dominated television. He created some of the most iconic series in TV history, including I Dream of Jeannie, The Patty Duke Show, and Hart to Hart. For years, he was the driving creative force behind primetime entertainment.
It wasn't until he was over fifty that Sheldon decided to try his hand at writing novels.
At an age when many successful people begin to wind down, he was just getting started on his biggest chapter yet. His debut novel, The Naked Face, was a critical hit and earned a nomination for an Edgar Award. However, it was his follow-up thrillers that turned him into a publishing phenomenon. Books like The Other Side of Midnight, Master of the Game, and If Tomorrow Comes became instant global bestsellers.
Sheldon had a unique and fascinating writing process. He didn't sit hunched over a keyboard. Instead, he used a "dictation" method. He would pace around his office, speaking his stories out loud to a secretary. He acted out the dialogue and let the rhythm of the spoken word drive the narrative. He often said that while he started with a general plan, the characters would eventually take over and dictate the plot to him.
Readers loved his books for their addictive quality. He was a master of the "cliffhanger," ending almost every chapter in a way that forced you to turn the page. He was also celebrated for his characters. Unlike many thriller writers of his time, Sheldon focused on resilient, intelligent female protagonists. His heroines were capable women who fought back against powerful adversaries and impossible odds.
Sidney Sheldon passed away in 2007, but his storytelling brand is still very much alive. His legacy has been carefully continued by author Tilly Bagshawe. She writes new thrillers and sequels under the Sidney Sheldon name, ensuring that fans can still enjoy the fast-paced, glamorous suspense that Sheldon made famous.
