Eleven-year-old Marty Preston befriends a beagle he believes is being abused by its owner. When his parents insist he return the dog, Marty hides it instead, creating a painful conflict between honesty, ownership, and protecting a vulnerable animal.

Marty hopes owning Shiloh will end his troubles with the dog’s former owner, Judd Travers. When Judd begins drinking and hunting on the Preston family’s land, Marty fears that protecting his beagle may require confronting the man again.
