Series background & context

Shifter Scoundrels takes a very modern world and stuffs it full of very old rules. The setup is half society drama, half paranormal romance, with shifter nobility, formal titles, royal expectations, spies, secrets, and the constant risk of scandal. If that sounds a little like a historical court romance wearing contemporary clothes, that is part of the fun.

The first books center on powerful, sharp-tongued men who know how to survive in elite circles, even when those circles are full of traps. Charlie Cochet and Macy Blake build a world where dragons, big cats, foxes, and other shifters move through a rigid social system that still values status, duty, and carefully managed appearances. At the same time, the stories are full of flirty banter, fake relationships, protective instincts, and characters who are much messier than they want to look.

That contrast carries the series.

In Notorious, a charming fox shifter earl and a disciplined tiger shifter are pushed together by court politics and danger. In Dangerous, the spotlight shifts to a lion duke with secrets and a human outsider suddenly pulled into a world he never knew existed. Across both books, there is a pattern: one character knows the rules too well, the other either bends them or crashes into them, and the romance grows in the middle of bigger threats.

The stakes are not only romantic. These books are built around attacks, hidden agendas, powerful enemies, and social systems that can hurt people just as easily as protect them. That gives the series more forward motion than a purely courtship-focused romance. There is always something to uncover, someone to outmaneuver, or some public disaster waiting to happen if the wrong secret slips out.

The tone stays lively, though. Cochet and Blake do not treat the setting like a solemn fantasy monarchy. They lean into the absurdity of tradition, the annoyance of public performance, and the spark that comes from pairing proud, competent men with partners who get under their skin. So while the world has hierarchy and danger, the reading experience is still quick, funny, and inviting.

If you want shifter romance with aristocratic chaos, mystery, and a lot of personality, this is the lane Shifter Scoundrels happily occupies.
