Author bio

Sherryl Clark was born in New Zealand in 1956 and grew up there before moving to Australia in 1978. She has written across crime fiction, children's books, young adult fiction and poetry, which means her bibliography can look almost like several writing lives stacked together. What connects it all is her interest in people under pressure, kids trying to find room to be themselves, and adults who keep asking one more question than is good for them.

She didn't come to writing in a straight line.

For years she wrote mostly for fun, especially while travelling, sending long letters home rather than keeping a diary. When she first lived in Melbourne in 1981, she took a creative writing class at the Footscray Women's Learning Centre. That class turned out to be a hinge point. It led her to study arts at Deakin University and into years of community writing work.

Those years matter in her story. Clark taught writing workshops, worked in publishing roles at the Footscray Community Arts Centre, and became part of Western Women Writers, a group that helped produce the poetry magazine Poetrix. She was also deeply involved in teaching, later spending more than two decades teaching professional writing and editing at Victoria University and related programs. Long before she became widely known as a children's author, she was already someone helping other writers get words onto the page.

In 1996, encouraged by fellow writer Meredith Costain, she began writing for children. Her first children's book, The Too Tight Tutu, appeared in 1997. It was followed by a steady run of books for younger readers, from funny early chapter books to middle grade stories and verse novels. Clark has said that working around self-publishing and small press projects early on was one of the best educations she could have had, and it shows in how practical and hard-working her career has been.

A lot of her children's books focus on determined young people who do not fit the mould very neatly. In Meet Rose, a Federation-era girl in Melbourne pushes against the limits placed on her. In the Ellyse Perry books, sport, school and friendship all collide at once. One Perfect Pirouette and Bone Song look at ambition, disappointment and the cost of growing up. Even in short books, Clark tends to make room for feeling, not just plot.

Verse became one of her strongest forms. Farm Kid won the NSW Premier's Literary Award for Children's Books, and Sixth Grade Style Queen (Not!) was named an Honour Book in the CBCA Awards. Much later, Mina and the Whole Wide World won the 2022 Prime Minister's Literary Award for Children's Literature. Readers who like Clark's verse novels usually talk about how direct they feel. She can say a lot with very little, and she trusts young readers to meet her halfway.

Crime fiction never really left her alone.

While publishing for children, she kept writing adult crime on the side. That strand came fully into view when Trust Me, I'm Dead, featuring Judi Westerholme, was shortlisted in the 2018 Debut Dagger competition and later published in the UK. It grew into a series with Dead and Gone and Mad, Bad and Dead. In 2024 she introduced another adult lead, private investigator Lou Alcott, in Woman, Missing. The cases are darker, but the same interest in resilience, damage and stubbornness is still there.

Clark also holds an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults and completed a PhD in Creative Writing in 2018, with a focus that included fairy tales. These days she writes full-time after many years of teaching, editing and mentoring alongside her own work. She has lived in Melbourne for decades, and that mix of practical craft, community work and sheer range is a big part of what makes her bibliography so interesting to browse.
