Author bio
Shaun David Hutchinson was born on May 1, 1978, in West Palm Beach, Florida, and grew up nearby in Jupiter. He was one of five children, with three brothers and a half-sister. His early school years were not exactly a straight line, he has described himself as a poor student who preferred sleeping through class, debate, and theater.
After Jupiter High School, Hutchinson attended Florida Atlantic University and studied medieval and Renaissance literature. He also trained in emergency medicine, earning EMT certification, and studied firefighting. Eventually, he left college and moved into information technology, where he designed databases, built apps, and coded websites.
Writing became the work that stuck.
His debut novel, The Deathday Letter, arrived in 2010. It follows a teen who learns he has just one day left to live, setting the pattern for stories that start with an unusual premise but stay close to a young person's fears, hopes, friendships, and bad decisions.
Hutchinson often brings science fiction, fantasy, horror, or surreal turns into stories about queer teens. In We Are the Ants, Henry Denton is given the chance to save the world, if he can decide whether the world is worth saving. At the Edge of the Universe follows Ozzie as his boyfriend vanishes from everyone's memory and reality itself seems to contract around him.
Those big concepts are never just decoration. They give his characters room to deal with grief, isolation, first love, family stress, identity, and the uneasy business of figuring out what comes next. The books can be funny, strange, and dark in the same chapter.
Romance matters, too. The State of Us turns the sons of rival presidential candidates into unlikely allies and then something more. In A Complicated Love Story Set in Space, three teens wake on a spacecraft with no idea how they got there, while Noa and DJ try to survive both the ship's dangers and their growing feelings for each other.
His 2019 memoir, Brave Face, is his most direct work. Hutchinson writes about growing up gay, depression, self-harm, an attempted suicide, and the long, uneven path toward accepting himself. It is frank about painful experiences, but it also makes space for survival and connection.
He has also edited the multi-author teen anthologies Violent Ends and Feral Youth. More recently, he began writing middle-grade supernatural mysteries with the Kairos Files books, including The School for Invisible Boys and A Home for Unusual Monsters.
The through line is simple: young people deserve stories that take their feelings seriously.
Hutchinson lives in Seattle and writes full time. Away from the page, he has said he enjoys baking, running, reading, and designing 3D environments for virtual reality. Coffee and cake also make regular appearances in his author bio, which feels about right for a writer whose books make room for both the heavy stuff and the weird little pleasures that help people keep going.
