Author bio

Shari J Ryan is a Boston-area author who has spent the last decade writing across several corners of fiction, but the common thread in her work is emotion. She writes historical fiction, psychological thrillers, romance, and women's fiction, and her books usually begin with ordinary people facing the kind of moment that changes everything.

She has described herself as a lifelong Boston girl. After earning a bachelor's degree from Johnson & Wales University, she worked as a graphic artist and freelance writer. Novel writing came later, in 2012, and once she found it, she did not seem interested in slowing down.

That late turn matters.

Ryan's historical fiction grew from family history as much as craft. She is the granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, and after her grandmother died she became more deeply interested in the stories that had been passed down through her family. That personal connection helped shape books like The Girl with the Diary, The Prison Child, The Soldier's Letters, The Bookseller of Dachau, and The Doctor's Daughter.

Those novels tend to return to a few big ideas. Memory. Survival. Love under pressure. The long reach of war into the lives that come after it. Ryan often writes about women and young people forced into impossible choices, people carrying secrets for decades, and families trying to find one another again after history has done its worst.

She does not stay in one lane, though.

Alongside the wartime books, Ryan has written contemporary romance and women's fiction, including Bourbon Love Notes and the Heart novels, where grief, family strain, and second chances matter just as much as the love story. Under the S.J. Ryan name, she has also written romantic comedies that are looser, louder, and much more openly playful, but even those books usually give the characters real baggage to work through.

She has also moved into domestic suspense with novels such as The Homemaker, The Perfect Nanny, and My Husband's Past. Those stories trade sweeping romance for missing people, lies inside marriages, and the creeping feeling that something is badly wrong behind closed doors. Different genre, same interest in emotional pressure.

Over the years, Ryan's books have reached a wide readership, been translated into multiple languages, and picked up bestseller status and a pair of RONE awards. Another way to put it is simpler. Readers come to her for high-stakes feeling, fast pages, and characters who are pushed hard.

Now she lives in a small town in the suburbs with her husband and two sons. From there, she keeps writing stories that range from wrenching World War Two fiction to twisty thrillers and messy, heartfelt romance. However different the shelves may look, her books are usually chasing the same thing, a reason to care deeply and keep turning pages.
