Author bio
Shane Peacock was born in 1957 in Port Arthur, Ontario, now part of Thunder Bay, and grew up in Kapuskasing in northern Ontario. The mix of rough weather, big landscapes, and local history that shaped those early years would later show up again and again in his fiction.
He studied English and history at Trent University, then completed a master's degree in literature at the University of Toronto, where he studied with Robertson Davies. Before he became known for novels, he worked as a journalist, a job that taught him how to chase a good story, ask better questions, and make complicated material feel clear on the page.
That work led him into magazines, newspapers, documentaries, and plays. He wrote about athletes, preachers, eccentrics, and people living at the edge of ordinary life. You can see the pattern already.
His first book set the tone.
The Great Farini told the true story of William Hunt, the Canadian high-wire performer and showman better known as the Great Farini. Peacock's interest in large, strange, risky lives did not stop there. In the Dylan Maples books, beginning with The Mystery Of Ireland's Eye, he turned family trips across Canada into suspenseful adventures shaped by local folklore, hard geography, and the uneasy feeling that history is never quite finished with us.
Many readers know him best for Eye of the Crow and the Boy Sherlock Holmes novels. Those books imagine Sherlock not as a finished genius but as a poor, angry, brilliant teenager trying to survive Victorian London while learning how to read people, patterns, and danger. The cases are fast and twisty, but what really holds the series together is the emotional arc. Peacock shows how a gifted boy, wounded by loss and prejudice, slowly becomes the detective readers already know.
The recognition followed. Eye of the Crow won the Arthur Ellis Award, Vanishing Girl won the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Award, and Becoming Holmes was a finalist for the Governor General's Award. Just as important, the series found young readers in a big way and travelled well beyond Canada in translation.
He likes pressure-cooker stories.
That shows up again in The Dark Missions of Edgar Brim, where Gothic horror, Victorian fears, and literary monsters collide, and in The Book of Us, a contemporary novel about first love, apology, and the damage careless words can do. He also joined the shared-world Seven project with Last Message, then returned to that character in Double You and Separated, giving readers a travel-heavy adventure line built around family secrets and tests of character.
More recently, Peacock moved into adult crime fiction with the Northern Gothic Mysteries, beginning with As We Forgive Others. The setting changes, but many of his interests do not. He still writes about outsiders, hidden motives, moral pressure, and the moment when someone decides to face what scares them instead of looking away.
He lives in Cobourg, Ontario, with his wife, journalist Sophie Kneisel. Across novels, picture books, plays, and screen work, the through-line is easy to spot: Shane Peacock likes stories in which the world looks one way at first glance, then turns out to be stranger, darker, and more human when you look again.
