All the Missing Pieces

by Catherine Cowles

2025

True crime podcaster Ridley Sawyer heads to Shady Cove to cover a string of cold case murders that echo her twin sister’s disappearance. Sheriff Colter Brooks wants her gone, but when Ridley’s investigation turns deadly, he becomes both her reluctant ally and the only man she dares to trust with her heart.

Series background & context

Shady Cove is a newer corner of Catherine Cowles’s world and, so far, is anchored by All the Missing Pieces. The town sits on the Northern California coast, a place where fog rolls in off the water, tourists drift through, and locals eye outsiders with a mix of curiosity and caution. It is also a town built around an old trauma that was never fully solved.

The story follows Ridley Sawyer, a true crime podcaster who turned the unsolved disappearance of her twin sister into a lifelong obsession with cold cases. When she comes to Shady Cove, she is chasing a pattern of murders that look uncomfortably similar to what happened to her family. Sheriff Colter Brooks still bears the scars of having media swarm his community years earlier and wants no part of a high profile investigation that could rip open wounds, yet he cannot quite ignore Ridley or the cases she is digging into.

As Ridley records episodes from the back of her beloved van and interviews the lone survivor of a past abduction, it becomes clear that someone in Shady Cove wants the past to stay buried. Attempts on her life force Colt to move from wary obstacle to determined protector, and what starts as mutual irritation and suspicion deepens into trust, attraction, and something like home. Their dynamic lets the book play with both the ethics of true crime storytelling and the very real comfort of being believed after years of doubt.

Shady Cove as a series framework leaves a lot of room for future stories. The town is full of side characters who practically ask for their own arcs, from bar owners and activists to family members who have complicated feelings about justice and forgiveness. Even if All the Missing Pieces remains a standalone, it still connects to the rest of Cowles’s universe through cameos and shared themes: women reclaiming their narratives, men learning that protection does not mean control, and communities learning how to live beside ghosts of very real crimes.
