Series background & context

The ShadowLands series begins with Night Whispers, a post-apocalyptic paranormal romance set after an illness has devastated humanity. Survivors live in underground shelters while dangerous, blood-drinking Shadows move through the world above. It is a much darker setting than Rai's contemporary romances, with survival and rescue work carrying real weight.

James Bennett is an analyst who has spent years underground. He works with an elite group trying to preserve what remains of humanity, watching the world through surveillance and coordinating teams in the field. James has been scarred by what he has seen, and he has good reasons to think that distance is safer than attachment.

Then he recruits Jules Guerrero.

Jules is a former gang member who now works as a tough, capable field agent. She understands loyalty, danger, and the need to keep moving when the world gives people no easy choices. James becomes a steady voice in her life, even before they meet face to face, and their connection grows through the risks of the mission.

The central action begins when Jules is captured by a rogue group whose plans are as dangerous as the Shadows outside. James has to leave the security of the bunker and cross a lawless landscape to find her. The book balances that rescue plot with the emotional work of two people who have learned to survive by keeping others at arm's length.

The setting matters throughout. Underground shelters, broken infrastructure, hostile territory, and the threat of the Shadows keep the tension high. Yet the story is still a romance at its core. James and Jules are not simply fighting monsters. They are also deciding whether trust is worth the risk when loss has become part of daily life.

At present, Night Whispers is the place to start and the main entry in this world. Readers can expect paranormal danger, dystopian survival elements, a guarded hero, a resilient heroine, and a cross-country mission that turns a distant connection into something much more personal.
