Series background & context

The Shadow Lake Survival series takes Susan Sleeman's suspense into the Oregon wilderness. The books center on a group of former cops and soldiers who run survival courses in a remote area and teach people how to live off-grid. But their compound is more than a training business. It also becomes a refuge for people who are scared, hunted, or trying to disappear long enough to stay alive.

That is a strong setup, and Sleeman uses it well.

The wilderness is not just scenery here. It shapes the whole series. Distance matters. Weather matters. So do cabins, trails, lakes, and the simple fact that if something goes wrong, help may not arrive quickly. The people running Shadow Lake Survival are exactly the kind of men who can handle that reality, which makes them believable protectors when danger lands on their doorstep.

Each book pairs a member of the Shadow Lake team with a woman in trouble, but the trouble is not all the same. Inheritance fights, family secrets, death threats, cyberstalking, off-grid fears, and old emotional wounds all feed into the suspense. The team members know survival in the practical sense, but the books also keep returning to emotional survival, what people do after betrayal, loss, or the feeling that nowhere is safe.

The tone is a little rougher and more isolated than in some of Sleeman's city or agency series. That gives it a tense, closed-in feel even though the setting is wide open.

If you like wilderness suspense, protective teams, and stories where the setting itself becomes part of the risk, Shadow Lake Survival is a good choice. Start with Shadow of Deceit and follow the team through the series in order.
