Series background & context

The Shadow Forest books follow Samuel Blink, an ordinary English boy whose life is ripped apart in the opening pages. After a tragic accident on a family car journey, Samuel and his younger sister Martha are sent to live with their aunt in rural Norway, in a house that backs onto a stretch of dark, forbidden woodland known as Shadow Forest.

Everyone in the village warns them to stay away from the trees. Local stories tell of missing people, strange creatures and a previous disappearance in Samuel’s own family. Their aunt keeps an old book in the attic that catalogues the forest’s inhabitants – trolls, huldra, witches, truth pixies and things too odd to name – and treats the woods as if they were a living enemy.

Of course the forest does not stay outside the fence. When Martha vanishes between the pines, Samuel has no choice but to follow. Inside Shadow Forest he finds a world that works by its own hard rules. Time bends, shadows can be stolen, and the creatures from the attic book are very real. Some want to eat him, some want to trick him, and a few turn out to be unexpected allies.

Beneath the monsters the books are about grief, sibling loyalty and the fear of being far from home. Samuel is angry, sad and often scared, but he keeps going because Martha needs him. The stories let younger readers sit with big feelings while still getting the pleasures of jokes, cliff‑hangers and outlandish fantasy set‑pieces.

The sequel brings the danger out of the forest. Troll‑Son, a young troll who idolises Samuel, runs away from Shadow Forest and turns up on the Blinks’ doorstep determined to live like a human. Hiding a confused, over‑sized troll in a small Norwegian town is funny, chaotic and risky, and it forces Samuel and Martha to think about what counts as home – and who gets shut out of it.

Taken together, the Shadow Forest novels blend European folklore with sharp, contemporary humour. They are spooky in places, but the tone stays warm and hopeful, and courage usually comes from small, everyday choices rather than grand destiny. They are a good fit for confident readers who like adventure, moral grey areas and just the right amount of shiver.
