Series background & context
J.D. Barker's Shadow Cove Saga begins with Forsaken, a supernatural horror novel published in 2014. Its central character, Thad McAlister, is a horror writer working on a story connected to the witch trials of centuries earlier. The words arrive with unusual ease, and he believes the manuscript could become his most important work. That apparent creative breakthrough also begins opening a dangerous connection between the story he is writing and his family's present-day life.
The novel follows two related sources of danger: Thad's growing involvement with his material and the threat facing his wife and children. His wife, Rachael, is pregnant, and their daughter Ashley is caught in events neither parent fully understands. While Thad encounters disturbing visions and a mysterious woman named Christina, Rachael tries to protect the household. Her worries include the possibility that a bargain made in the past has helped bring the danger upon them. Personal secrets therefore matter alongside the supernatural events.
The story Thad thinks he is creating may already be using him.
Sections of his manuscript appear within the main narrative, linking the family's troubles to an earlier world of imprisonment and witchcraft accusations. A journal account places part of that story in Shadow Cove in 1692, where an unnamed young woman faces examination and trial. This structure allows the past to enter the book through writing itself. The reader follows Thad's work while also watching its consequences unfold beyond the page, creating uncertainty about the boundary between fictional invention and a force seeking to return.
Shadow Cove is associated with dark magic and strange creatures, while the family setting gives the threat an immediate human scale. The horror includes witches, spells, unsettling visions and demonic beings. Much of its tension comes from characters trying to understand what they have awakened before they can decide how to resist it. Thad's confidence in his manuscript contrasts with his growing unease, and Rachael's efforts to keep her children safe place family responsibility beside fear and doubt. Their separate experiences gradually belong to the same larger problem.
Forsaken is the starting point for the saga and the book represented here. It combines a writer's dangerous encounter with his own subject matter, a historical witch-trial narrative and a family under siege. Readers can expect supernatural suspense built around the connections among creativity, old bargains and returning evil. The linked narratives make the past part of the immediate danger, rather than a distant background to it.
