Ah Puch, once a fearsome god of death, is a memorable part of Ren's orbit, and The Lords of Night also brings in new companions like Edison, a teen demon, and Monty, a young Aztec hunter. Their mix of loyalty, jokes, bickering, and real fear gives the books some welcome warmth, even when the stakes get grim. Cervantes likes fast scenes and sharp turns, but she also gives her characters room to be awkward, funny, stubborn, and scared.

This is not a cozy series.

The Shadow Bruja books lean darker than the original Storm Runner trilogy, especially because Ren's biggest problem is not just what the villains want, but why they want her. The ongoing arc turns on identity, inheritance, and the danger of believing that power alone can save you. As the story continues, underworld bargains, missing magic, and old loyalties make Ren rely less on raw force and more on nerve, sacrifice, and trust.

If you like mythology-heavy fantasy that still feels close to the ground, this series is an easy fit. It has monsters, prophecies, and world-ending danger, but it also has road-trip energy, friendship drama, and a heroine who keeps having to decide what kind of person she wants to be. That balance, big myth on one side, very human mess on the other, is what gives Shadow Bruja its bite.
