Seven Forges Books in Order

The Seven Forges books begin with a straightforward fantasy hook and then keep widening the frame. Captain Merros Dulver travels into the hostile Blasted Lands north of Fellein and becomes the first man in generations to cross the mountains known as the Seven Forges. What he finds there is not empty wilderness, but the Sa'ba Taalor, a half-forgotten people with their own rulers, their own customs, and gods of war who feel very close to daily life.

That first contact shapes everything.

What makes the series work is that discovery and diplomacy matter as much as battle, at least at the start. Merros does not simply find a lost race and go home with a trophy story. He becomes part of a dangerous exchange between two very different cultures. The empire of Fellein has grown used to a certain kind of order. The people of the Seven Forges have grown hard in a harsher land, and they bring their own sense of power, hierarchy, and divine obligation with them. The tension is built in before the real war even starts.

As the books continue, the cast opens out. Soldiers, rulers, apprentices, zealots, refugees, and survivors all get pulled into the widening conflict. Old stories about the cataclysm that scarred the Blasted Lands stop feeling like distant legend and start looking like unfinished business. Cities begin to strain under fear and migration. Armies move. Faith gets tested. And the gods, or at least the powers people call gods, never feel entirely abstract.

The setting matters a lot here. The Blasted Lands are not generic fantasy wasteland scenery. They sit in the middle of the series as a reminder that the world has already survived one enormous disaster, and might not survive another. Mountains, valleys, ruined places, and border cities all shape the story in practical ways. These books care about what war does to geography, to trade, to politics, and to people who are nowhere near the throne.

In tone, this is dark fantasy and military fantasy, but it is not written to be opaque. Moore keeps the prose moving. He gives you enough worldbuilding to understand why things matter, but he does not make you dig through a lecture before something explodes. If you like epic fantasy with strong momentum, culture clash, gods that interfere, and wars that feel costly at every level, this is a good fit.

Start with Seven Forges, then go straight into The Blasted Lands. If the mix of first contact, grim politics, brutal combat, and slowly expanding myth works for you there, the rest of the series keeps building on that foundation.
