Series background & context
Series of Blood is one of Emma Hamm's earlier fantasy series, and it has the feel of an author building a larger myth one piece at a time. Rather than staying with a single couple, the books move across a cast of characters whose lives are tied together by prophecy, magic, and the strange rules of their world. The titles, Silver Blood, Red Blood, Blue Blood, and Black Blood, give a good sense of the structure. Each book pulls a different thread, then the series gradually knots them together.
The first thing to know is that this is a more ensemble-driven story than some of Hamm's later romantasy series. Characters step forward in one book, then become part of the bigger picture in the next. There are romances, but there is also a wider fantasy plot carrying the books along, with fate, ancient magic, and a looming threat hanging over everything.
The prophecy matters.
So does the atmosphere. Even in these earlier books, Hamm is clearly drawn to the collision between tenderness and danger. There are magical gifts that feel as much like burdens as strengths, morally difficult choices, and characters trying to figure out whether they are meant to save the world or break it further. Later in the series, especially by Black Blood, the scope gets larger and the emotional stakes deepen as hidden connections come into view.
This is a good series to try if you are curious about Hamm's earlier work and do not mind a fantasy world that unfolds in layers. It is less polished than some of her later breakout books, but you can already see many of her interests: unusual magic, emotionally intense relationships, and people wrestling with power they did not ask for.
Readers who enjoy ensemble fantasy with romance woven through it may find a lot to like here. The books feel like steps in one bigger design, and part of the fun is watching that design slowly reveal itself.
