Series background & context

Crissy Smith's Secrets series is a compact paranormal romantic suspense story, beginning with The Shifter and the Dreamer. It follows Sheriff Katy Rose and Federal Agent Cameron Morris, former partners with a shared past, as a serial killer brings them back together in Katy's small hometown.

Katy has spent much of her life avoiding the truth about her unusual ability. Leaving the FBI and becoming sheriff was meant to give her a quieter life and some distance from Cameron, the man she loved but could not fully trust with her secrets. That plan falls apart when a killer arrives and the case demands outside help.

Running is no longer an option.

Cameron has not forgotten Katy. He let her go because he knew she was not ready to face the supernatural side of his life, and because he sensed she was hiding something important herself. Returning to work beside her brings back the attraction between them, but it also forces both characters to confront the reasons they split apart.

The mystery gives the romance its urgency. Katy and Cameron need to find the killer before anyone else dies, but their investigation is tangled up with hidden gifts, shifter identity, and the personal fears neither one has fully named. Katy's small-town role matters because she is responsible for protecting people who may have no idea how strange the danger around them really is.

The tone is moody but fast-moving. This is a story about second chances, old secrets, and two people whose personal history keeps getting in the way of honest communication. It also has the familiar Smith ingredients of paranormal danger and a protective shifter hero, but the central relationship is between two people who already know exactly how much they could lose.

Start with The Shifter and the Dreamer. It is the first entry and introduces both Katy and Cameron's history, the nature of Katy's gift, and the case that brings them together again.
