Those relationships give the books warmth, but they also add pressure. Sheila's life in Kentucky gets fuller as the series goes on, which means her old secret becomes harder to manage, not easier.

The tone here is traditional mystery with a cozy edge, but not fluffy mystery. The books have humor, dogs, smart conversations, and recurring side characters you want to spend time with. At the same time, there is a steady undercurrent of reinvention. Sheila is building a second life in real time, and every case tests whether she can keep it.
