Series background & context

The Secret Library books take place at Thornberry Estate, a house that feels almost like a character on its own. It is old, strange, full of secrets, and just creepy enough to keep everyone a little off balance. When Laura Lee arrives to work there as a housekeeper, she expects a temporary job. She does not expect a hidden world inside the walls.

The big series gimmick is delightful. The estate's owner hates books, so the staff quietly builds a secret book club out of rescued volumes and hidden reading time. That means every mystery unfolds inside a house where people are already sneaking around, protecting one another, and keeping quiet about things they do not want the boss to know.

And then there is Hank.

The cat wanders where he pleases, turns up in the strangest places, and often seems to know more about the house than any human does. Hidden passages, locked rooms, odd messages, suspicious deaths, and long-held grudges all fit naturally into this setting. Laura Lee is the reader's way in, but the larger staff, cooks, maids, helpers, and the women in the club, give the series its real heart.

The tone lands somewhere between gothic-lite and cozy comfort. There are murders, yes, but there is also companionship, humor, and the ongoing pleasure of seeing clever people use books and friendship to fight back against fear. The mysteries often tie back to the estate itself, which helps the series feel connected from book to book.

If you like old mansions, secret rooms, cats with attitude, and a found-family cast that solves crimes together, Secret Library is one of James's most distinctive setups. It is spooky in a friendly way, and very easy to get attached to.
