The Sebastien Grey series is a forensic mystery sequence set in and around the Black Hills of South Dakota. Its central figure is Dr. Sebastien Grey, a highly observant forensic anthropologist who can read difficult evidence but struggles with social anxiety and close relationships. He is brilliant at the work. Being around people is the harder part.

Sebastien's brother, Sergeant Hank LeGris of the Custer County Sheriff's Office, draws him into the first case in The Comfort of Distance. Human remains are turning up in the woods, while rumors of a man-eating mountain lion unsettle the county. Hank needs answers, and Sebastien's specialist knowledge may be the only way to separate frightening rumor from a human crime.

The cases are built around the slow, practical work of forensic investigation. Sebastien studies bones, trauma, timelines, and the small inconsistencies that can change an investigation. Detective Tiffany Reese becomes a key partner in that work, and the series gives their professional relationship room to develop alongside the mysteries.

Each book brings a different puzzle. The Comfort of Distance introduces the fractured LeGris family and the rural community where Sebastien is suddenly needed. In The Boxwood Torso, a skull and a torso discovered in different places appear to point back to the same long-unidentified victim. Where the Blood is Made follows a ten-year-old missing-person case that Sebastien believes should be treated as a homicide, while a strange private request puts him on edge.

The forensic details are important, but these are not stories where science instantly solves everything. Witnesses, old grudges, department politics, family secrets, and bad assumptions can all get in the way. Sebastien has to learn when to trust his analysis and when to trust the people trying to help him.

The tone mixes police procedural suspense with character-driven moments, dry humor, and a gradual thread of romance. The Black Hills are more than a backdrop, too. The isolated roads, forests, small-town connections, and long memories make every discovery feel personal.

The books work best in publication order. The crimes change from novel to novel, but Sebastien's growth, his reconciliation with Hank, and his connection with Tiffany carry forward.
