Author bio

Sean Liscom was born in California in October 1970, but he has called northern Nevada home since 1977. He grew up there, and that rugged part of the West still feels close to his fiction, where weather, distance, and self-reliance matter.

Long before he was publishing novels, Liscom was working emergencies. In the spring of 1988 he joined a local volunteer fire department, and over the years he served as a firefighter, EMT-B, engine operator, safety officer, training officer, engine captain, and Type III Incident Commander. He also spent wildfire seasons with a government-contracted engine strike team, work that put him in charge of crews, vehicles, and hard decisions when conditions went bad.

That background shows up on the page.

After starting a family, he moved into warehouse and security jobs in the private sector. He has said those years taught him how shaky job security can be, which helped push him toward prepping, storing food, water, and other essentials long before he ever turned that mindset into fiction.

The story that became Jason Sterling's had been with him since around 1987. Like a lot of writers, he built up a pile of half-finished manuscripts first. Then, in September 2016, he finally sat down at his laptop and started writing in earnest, working through rewrites and blocks until the book was ready.

He has also said his wife, Denise, helped him push through that early stage, especially when the writing got stuck and the project felt harder to finish than to imagine.

Jack Sterling's Legacy, published in 2017, kicked off the saga now grouped under The Legacy. Those books follow Jason Sterling, his family, and a widening circle of allies through an EMP collapse and the hard work of building something stable afterward. Readers who click with Liscom usually respond to the same things, practical survival details, strong group dynamics, and characters who have to solve problems instead of just pose with weapons.

That same mix carries into A Legacy of Violence, A Legacy of Darkness, and Interims, where family secrets and outside threats keep pressing on the ranch. Later books such as Evolutions and Endeavors widen the lens by giving other characters room to lead. He also wrote Feral Outbreak, which swaps an EMP scenario for a virus-driven nightmare, and Helios, which starts the Whisper Ridge books with a solar disaster and a mountain community trying to hold together.

He has said Interims nearly got scrapped before he reworked it and realized Tara Sterling needed her moment.

Liscom still lives in northern Nevada, and he has said he does some of his best writing late at night, often starting after 9 p.m. and going until 1 or 2 in the morning. That feels fitting for the books he writes. They are full of long watches, uneasy silence, and the kind of decisions people make when everyone else is asleep.
