Series background & context

The Seagate Summers books follow Remy and her friends during the kind of beach vacations that are supposed to feel permanent, right up until they do not. Seagate Island is the place Remy’s family returns to every summer, a spot tied to her grandmother’s house, long-running traditions, and the comforting idea that some parts of childhood will stay the same. But from the very first book, Greenwald makes it clear that summer magic does not freeze time.

That is what gives this series its extra pull.

In Welcome to Dog Beach, Remy arrives at Seagate carrying grief for her dog, Danish, who has died. On top of that, her friendships are shifting. Micayla’s family is moving to the island full time, which changes her place in the summer group, and Bennett is being pulled toward new friendships of his own. Remy turns to Dog Beach, and eventually to a plan of her own, because she wants to pull everyone back together and recover the feeling that Seagate used to have.

The island setting does a lot of work in these books. Seagate is sunny and breezy, but it is also full of rules, habits, and little territorial changes. Who belongs year-round and who only belongs in summer starts to matter. So does weather. In Dog Beach Unleashed, Remy is back with Micayla, Bennett, and the C twins, and her dog-sitting business becomes a bigger part of the story. But the season turns into the rainiest on record, with evacuation threatening to upend everything. Dogs get restless. Friends get cranky. A dream summer starts to feel fragile.

The tone stays warm and accessible, and the dog element makes the series especially inviting. But these books are not just cute beach reads with pets. They are about disappointment, adjustment, and the work of keeping friendships alive when people begin changing at different speeds. Remy is a good center for that because she is inventive and hopeful, even when she is hurt.

There is also a strong sense of place throughout. The beach, the houses, the routines, and even the weather all shape the story. Greenwald understands that for kids, a summer community can feel like its own country.

If you like middle grade stories about friendship, dogs, and the strange mix of freedom and sadness that can come with growing up, Seagate Summers is a gentle, thoughtful series to pick up.
