SD Sykes Books in Order

S. D. Sykes lives in the Weald of Kent, a rural part of England whose old villages and deep history have helped shape her fiction. Her route there has included Somerset, London, Southampton and Manchester.

Stories arrived early. As a child, she wrote her first book at six and insisted that it be typed up and bound.

Before publishing novels, Sykes worked in marketing and copywriting. While building that career, she studied for an MA in Writing at Sheffield Hallam. She is also a graduate of Manchester University, and later received Arts Council funding to develop screenplays.

A novel-writing course gave her the push to finish Plague Land, her first published novel. That book introduced Oswald de Lacy, a young man who has expected a religious life but is abruptly pulled into the dangerous work of running a medieval estate.

Sykes has said that the Middle Ages chose her, rather than the other way around. Fairy tales first drew her toward castles, forests, lords, peasants and old fears. For crime fiction, the period from 1348 to 1381 held a particular pull: it begins with the Black Death and ends with the failed Peasants' Revolt, years when English life was changing fast.

That setting became the foundation for the Somershill Manor books. In Plague Land, Oswald returns to Kent after plague devastates his family and must investigate a murder amid panic and superstition. The Butcher Bird follows him as he tries to govern a manor still struggling after the epidemic. In City of Masks, the story moves to Venice, where a delayed pilgrimage places him in a city of canals, secrets and political suspicion.

The later novels keep widening the view while staying close to Oswald's family life. The Bone Fire sends him and his family to an isolated castle as plague returns to England. The Good Death brings him face to face with a secret from his youth, linking an older Oswald's difficult family reckoning with a murder investigation from 1349.

Family loyalty, class, faith, fear and the cost of survival run through the series. Sykes is interested in the gap between what medieval people believed and what they could actually prove, especially when rumor offers an easier answer than evidence. Oswald is not a polished detective. He is a reluctant lord learning, book by book, how to question powerful people, protect those close to him and live with what he discovers.

Her process is practical and research-heavy. Sykes plans before drafting, visits historic sites to imagine how places might have looked, felt and smelled centuries ago, writes in the mornings, and then works through substantial rewrites. That care gives her mysteries their grounded sense of place.
