Scottie's Adventures Books in Order

Scottie's Adventures follows Scottie Darden, an investigative journalist and photographer whose heart tends to move faster than her good sense. That combination gives these books a different feel from much of Ashley Farley's later women's fiction. They are more overtly suspenseful, a little more impulsive, and driven by Scottie's habit of stepping straight into situations that sensible people would avoid.

She means well. That is part of the trouble.

In Merry Mary, Scottie's compassion pulls her into an impossible choice when she finds a dead woman and an abandoned baby. In Breaking the Story, her personal life is a mess, her career needs rescuing, and a political scandal offers exactly the kind of dangerous opportunity she cannot quite resist. Those premises tell you a lot about the series. Scottie is drawn to vulnerable people, hidden truths, and the sort of split-second decisions that can change her life for the worse.

The books are connected by her character more than by one long mystery. She is the through line, curious, emotional, stubborn, and often trying to rebuild after some fresh disaster. That makes the series feel part romantic suspense, part adventure, and part character study of a woman who keeps finding herself one step beyond safe territory.

If you read Ashley Farley mostly for Southern family drama, this is one of the places where she shifts tone a bit. The emotional stakes are still there, but the plots move faster and lean harder on secrets, investigation, and the tension created by Scottie's own choices. It is a short series, which makes it easy to sample.

So if you want to see Farley in a more suspense-forward mode, start here. Scottie is messy, compassionate, and easy to root for, even when you wish she would slow down for five minutes.
