A Deadly Education
by Naomi Novik
2020
At the Scholomance, a sentient school for young wizards, monsters lurk everywhere and half the students will never graduate. Galadriel Higgins, burdened with a dark prophecy and a talent for destructive magic, tries to survive without becoming the villain everyone fears.
Series background & context
The Scholomance trilogy takes the classic magic school idea and asks what it would look like if the danger level matched the stakes. The school sits in the Void, far from the normal world, and is meant to shelter wizard teenagers from the monsters that hunt them. Even here, survival is only a coin flip.
There are no teachers, no holidays, and no exits until graduation. The building itself assigns lessons, spits out homework, and occasionally fails in ways that let maleficaria, mana eating creatures known as mals, slip in. The school motto, In Wisdom, Shelter, feels more like a warning than a promise.
Into this comes Galadriel Higgins, usually called El, the narrator of all three books. She is half Welsh and half Indian, raised outside the powerful wizard enclaves and burdened with a prophecy that says she will one day destroy many of them. Her natural affinity is for spells of mass destruction, but she has sworn off the kind of dark magic that would make fulfilling that prophecy easy.
Over A Deadly Education, The Last Graduate, and The Golden Enclaves, readers follow El from her third year through graduation and into the fallout. At first the story is mostly about day to day tactics, alliances, and grudges inside the school's deadly halls. As El connects with other students, including exhausted monster slayer Orion Lake and a shifting group of friends and rivals, the focus widens to take in the politics of enclaves around the world and the hidden bargains that keep the Scholomance running.
Across all three books, the big questions stay the same. Whose safety is treated as optional. How much risk can you ask others to bear for your own survival. What does it mean to build a fairer system when the old one is literally designed in blood.
The tone is dark, often violent, but also very funny in a bitter, ranting way. El's voice moves quickly between sarcasm, anger, and moments of painfully vulnerable honesty. World building details about mana, enclaves, and mals matter, but the emotional core lives in friendships, family histories, and the choice to care about people you could safely ignore.
This background is meant to give you a sense of what the Scholomance books are doing as a whole, how the stakes rise from school assignments to global change, and why so many readers choose to follow El's story straight through from the first cursed homework problem to the last hard decision.
