Mirrors Never Lie
by Edie Baylis
2023
Fresh out of prison, Zane Morelli learns the man who framed him is alive and that his own firm scarred him for a betrayal he never made. Revenge looks simple until Erin Langley, with her own score to settle, gets in his way.
Series background & context
The Scarred series starts with a brutal homecoming. Zane Morelli comes out of prison expecting answers, revenge, and maybe a way back into the life that was taken from him. Instead he finds out the story he was told was false, the man he blames is still alive, and his own side once marked him as a traitor.
This is a family war story as much as a crime thriller.
Zane is the centre of the series, but he is never the only person driving the trouble. Erin Langley has her own anger, her own history, and her own reasons for refusing to stand quietly on the sidelines. Their connection gives the books a lot of heat, but it is never simple or soft. In Baylis's world, attraction and suspicion usually arrive together, and romance is never kept safely apart from danger.
The real pressure comes from inside the Morelli circle. Marco Morelli is not just an enemy, he is blood, and that makes every clash worse. What begins in Mirrors Never Lie as a personal hunt for payback grows in The Price of Betrayal and Trusting Blood into something much bigger, a fight over power, inheritance, and who gets to shape the future of the firm. Zane wants more than revenge. He wants control of his life again, and later he wants stability. The series keeps showing how hard that is when every step forward wakes up another buried problem.
A surprise daughter, uneasy alliances, and old promises make the later books especially tense. The Hard Truth and The Last Promise push the emotional stakes higher without letting go of the gangland plot. Characters are always trying to rebuild, protect, or claim something, but every move seems to expose another motive underneath. That is where the series gets much of its edge. The biggest threat is not always the loudest one in the room.
Peace never lasts here.
The setting helps a lot. These books live in a hard-edged London criminal world where clubs, business deals, family houses, and back-room conversations can all turn dangerous in a second. Baylis keeps the focus on loyalties rather than police work, so the suspense comes from who is hiding what, who is willing to switch sides, and who will strike first. There is also a slight psychological edge running through the series, because manipulation matters almost as much as force. If you like gangland thrillers built around damaged family ties, revenge, and relationships that are never fully safe, Scarred is a strong place to start. It works best read in order, because each book lands directly on the fallout of the last.
