Series background & context

The Savannah series is Lisa Jackson at her most Southern-gothic and unnerving. Set in Georgia’s coastal city, the books follow detectives Pierce Reed and Sylvie Morrisette as they chase a killer through a place that looks beautiful in the daylight and feels menacing after dark.

Savannah keeps its secrets.

The city is a huge part of the experience. The historic squares, the old money, the tourist gloss, and the moss-draped streets give the stories a built-in contrast, charm on top, rot underneath. Jackson leans into that tension, using the city’s history and hidden corners to keep the investigations off balance.

The series starts with The Night Before, where a case pulls Reed and Morrisette into a knot of secrets that won’t stay buried. As the books move into The Morning After and then The Third Grave, the danger escalates and the personal connections tighten, especially when people close to the investigation become targets.

A key thread across the series is the way outside attention can complicate police work. A reporter named Nikki becomes part of the story, and her curiosity and determination put her close to the truth, and close to the killer’s reach. That push and pull, between the need to know and the need to survive, drives a lot of the suspense.

Reed and Morrisette make a compelling pair because they work differently. Reed is intense and driven, willing to press hard when he sees a pattern. Morrisette brings steadiness and a sharper read on people, which matters in a city where everyone seems to have a polished version of themselves ready for public view. Together, they balance instinct with method.

These are quick, high-stakes novels that end chapters on the kind of beats that make you keep reading. At the same time, the series rewards readers who like character continuity, recurring relationships, and the slow shift from “just another case” to “this is personal.”

Read in order for the clearest arc and the best sense of how the investigation’s fallout shapes the characters. If you jump in midstream, the plot will still make sense, but you’ll miss some of the emotional build that makes the later twists land harder.
