She also keeps circling back to Professor Gregory Merchiston, a brilliant but troubled mentor who recognises her talent before most people do, which adds another uneasy layer to the books.

By The Unquiet Heart, the focus widens from the city's rougher edges to the polished world of upper-class Edinburgh, though it turns out to be no cleaner. Sarah wants out of an engagement that was supposed to make her respectable again, but when her fiancé is accused of murder she is pulled into the case whether she likes it or not. Poison, blackmail, family secrets, and asylums all come into play. The tone stays dark and grounded, but the books are very readable, with brisk mysteries, vivid medical detail, and a heroine whose personal stakes are always tied to the larger case.

If you like historical crime with sharp social pressure, a strong sense of place, and a lead who has to fight for every inch, this series lands well.
