Author bio
Sara Ney writes romance with a grin on its face. She is an Amazon and USA Today bestselling author whose books move between college romance, sports romance, and adult romantic comedy, usually with a lot of sparks, very little patience, and just enough chaos to keep things fun.
She writes people who talk fast and fall hard.
A lot of readers first meet her through the How to Date a Douchebag books, especially The Studying Hours. That series helped set the tone for what she does so well: cocky athletes, smart women, sharp banter, and heroes who look like total disasters until the softer parts start to show. Even the title tells you she knows the joke, and the books are in on it from page one.
She stayed in that lane, but never in exactly the same way twice. Jock Row leans into campus parties and athlete house politics. Hard Pass and the Trophy Boyfriends books shift into adult sports romance. Campus Legends follows the Colter brothers through college football, fake dating, twin confusion, and the general mess of being young, hot, and not nearly as in control as you think you are.
The jokes come quickly, but the emotional payoff is never treated like an afterthought.
What keeps Ney's work recognizable is the mix of confidence and awkwardness. Her heroines are usually funny, observant, and unwilling to be steamrolled. Her heroes might be wrestlers, football players, hockey players, or the kind of man who thinks a terrible plan is somehow a good idea, but they tend to have the same problem: they do not expect to be seen clearly, and they definitely do not expect to like it when it happens. Libraries, shared apartments, locker rooms, road trips, weddings, late-night texts, and accidental confessions all get plenty of mileage in her books.
Her first published novel, Kissing in Cars, arrived in 2014. Since then she has built out a long list of standalones and connected series, including reader favorites like The Failing Hours, The Learning Hours, Not Your Biggest Fan, and the co-written office romance Love Sincerely Yours, written with Meghan Quinn. Her books have also been translated into several languages, including editions for readers in Germany, Italy, Brazil, and Israel, which tells you her brand of funny, flirty romance travels well.
Outside the novels, the details she shares are nicely specific. She has talked about loving travel, historical architecture, vintage books, art, flea markets, and iced lattes. She lives in the Midwest with her partner, Jeff, in a blended household with four teenagers, and she has joked that travel is the only time she gets the bathroom to herself. That kind of dry, everyday humor feels very on-brand.
More recently, she has kept stretching her range without losing her voice. Books like Hit Me With Your Best Shot bring her into pro hockey, while Love on Ice returns to a younger, sweeter high school setup. No matter the age group or sport, the pull is similar: lively dialogue, slightly ridiculous situations, and characters who have to grow up just enough to let love catch them.
