Author bio

Sara Bennett is the historical romance name used by Australian writer Kaye Dobbie. She was born in Geelong, Victoria, in 1957, and spent much of her childhood in New South Wales. Long before publication entered the picture, she was the kind of reader who would happily move from mystery to horror to romance, following whatever story caught her eye.

Books came first.

She has said that writing was not part of some tidy life plan. Before it became a career, she worked in government jobs and wrote short pieces on the side. A big early turning point came when she won the Big River short story contest at eighteen. That win did more than offer encouragement. It showed her that other people wanted to read what she wrote, and that a private habit might grow into real work.

Her publishing life has taken a few different names. She began writing for Mills and Boon as Deborah Miles, later wrote Australian historical fiction as Lilly Sommers, and has also published paranormal romance as Sara Mackenzie. As Sara Bennett, she became known for historical romance, especially the kind that mixes longing, danger, family trouble, and a strong sense of period without getting buried in costume details.

That range shows up quickly in the books. The Lily and the Sword and The Rose and the Shield drop readers into the rough world of post-Conquest England, where land, loyalty, and survival matter as much as love. The Greentree books, beginning with Lessons in Seduction, shift to Victorian England and bring in orphanages, courtesans, lost daughters, and women trying to make room for themselves in a society that likes neat labels.

She likes a setup with some trouble in it.

In her Regency work, that trouble often comes from reputation, money, class, or a reckless promise made years too early. The Husband Hunters Club novels, the Mockingbird Square stories, and later books like Dreaming of a Duke Like You all play with those pressures in different ways. Readers who enjoy Bennett usually seem to come back for the same reasons: brisk pacing, strong romantic tension, and heroines who may be vulnerable but are rarely passive.

Her career has also had staying power. She has been a finalist for the RITA and the RUBY, and her books have been translated into many languages. She has moved between traditional publishing and independent publishing over the years, which helps explain why her backlist feels both broad and a little adventurous.

These days she lives in Victoria, in an old house in a gold-rush town, with her husband and cats. She loves gardening, especially old roses, and she still writes across more than one lane, historical romance as Sara Bennett and women's fiction as Kaye Dobbie.

That mix suits her work. The books are romantic, but they are also full of people trying to make a life, reclaim a past, or choose love without losing themselves.
