Symon writes police procedurals, but they are grounded in very specific communities. A university path through the Botanic Gardens, looted shipping containers on an exposed beach, a wealthy home turned violent, or a cold case tied to a respected church figure all feel shaped by local pressure, local gossip, and the way people know each other's business. The setting is not decorative. It is part of the tension.

The tone sits in a sweet spot between fast-moving mystery and character-driven drama. The crimes are serious, sometimes bleak, but the books never lose sight of ordinary life, awkward conversations, work politics, or Sam's dry resilience. Each novel gives you a full case to follow, yet there is an ongoing arc underneath as Sam moves from young constable to more seasoned detective, makes mistakes, lives with the fallout, and keeps going.

If you like crime series where the lead actually changes from book to book, Sam Shephard is a good fit. Reading in order works best, because her career and personal life build across the novels, but the hook stays consistent throughout: a determined detective, a strong New Zealand setting, and cases that never stay as simple as they first look.
