Author bio
Sally Andrew is a South African mystery writer whose work is closely tied to the Klein Karoo, the dry and wide-open region where her Tannie Maria stories are set. She lives in a mud-brick house on a nature reserve with her partner, artist Bowen Boshier, and the local wildlife, including a giant eland and a secretive leopard.
Writing was part of Andrew’s life early on. As a child, she loved books so much that she tried writing her own versions of the stories she read. Her father also taught her that entertainment mattered, a lesson that shows up in novels that make room for jokes, good meals, romance, and a properly knotty mystery.
For many years, though, fiction was not her main job. Andrew worked as a social and environmental activist, doing environmental, educational, and political writing. She later managed Boshier’s art business, and she earned a master’s degree in adult education from the University of Cape Town.
A period of illness changed her relationship with writing. After developing Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome, she gave herself permission to write more personal, imaginative work instead of writing only for a campaign or cause.
That shift led to Recipes for Love and Murder, her first novel and the beginning of the Tannie Maria Mystery series. Its central character is a middle-aged recipe writer who becomes an advice columnist, then finds herself drawn into a murder investigation. The book mixes a serious case with food, friendship, and a small-town Karoo setting.
Food is never just decoration in these stories.
In The Satanic Mechanic, Maria confronts old trauma while a poisoning follows a land-rights victory. Death on the Limpopo sends her toward political danger and questions from her own past. The Milk Tart Murders begins with a suspicious death at a vintage movie screening, while Wild Things Never Die takes Maria and Detective Henk Kannemeyer into a case involving succulent poaching in a Karoo wilderness reserve.
The mysteries often deal with violence, grief, land, corruption, conservation, and the slow work of healing. Andrew keeps the focus on people trying to help one another, even when they are frightened or getting things wrong. Readers who enjoy character-led mysteries tend to find plenty to hold onto in Maria’s letters, recipes, and sharp observations about everyday life.
The series has travelled well beyond its South African setting, with the books translated into multiple languages and Recipes for Love and Murder adapted for television. Andrew still draws inspiration from the Klein Karoo, southern African wilderness, and time spent in Muizenberg by the sea.
Her mysteries make space for danger, but also for a cup of tea, a decent meal, and another chance to be brave.
