Series background & context

Sagebrush Ranch is one of April Murdock's most fully developed series worlds. The ranch itself was founded decades earlier by a Texan who came to Montana on a cattle drive, fell in love with the mountains, and stayed. That history matters because the books never treat the ranch as a disposable setting. It is a family place, a working place, and a place with roots.

The series is set around Rocky Ridge, Montana, and it uses that small-town backdrop well. Characters know one another. Family overlap matters. Old feelings linger. Across books like When You're Friends, When You're Waiting, When You're Competing, and When You're Finally Home, the ranch anchors a wide range of romance tropes, friends to lovers, single dad, business rivalry, hometown return, fake dating, enemies to lovers, and hidden secrets.

That variety keeps the series lively.

Even though the setups change from book to book, the emotional feel stays consistent. These are sweet, family-centered romances where everyday details matter. A coffee shop across from a bookstore can carry as much tension as a big inheritance fight. A deaf child learning sign language can become the center of a love story. A romance writer hiding out for the summer can fit just as naturally into the ranch world as someone who grew up there.

The Montana setting gives the series a slightly softer, more reflective mood than some of the Texas books. There is still humor and chemistry, but there is also a strong sense of people trying to belong, or to come back after time away and figure out whether they still do. The ranch gives them a place to test that question.

If you want an interconnected small-town ranch series with lots of emotional variety, this is one of Murdock's best examples. It rewards reading in order, but each book also has its own distinct couple and problem, which makes it easy to settle into at any point.
