Where should I start?
For the main fantasy saga: An Ember in the Ashes → A Torch Against the Night → A Reaper at the Gates → A Sky Beyond the Storm.
For a next-generation return to the Empire: Heir → Empire.
For graphic novel prequel stories: A Thief Among the Trees → A Spark Within the Forge.
For contemporary YA first: All My Rage.
Author bio
Sabaa Tahir was born in London to Pakistani parents and grew up in Ridgecrest, California, a Mojave Desert town built around heat, distance, and a nearby naval base. Her family ran an eighteen-room motel, and the building became part home, part workplace, part front-row seat to other people's stories.
She has talked about feeling like an outsider there. Her family was one of the few South Asian Muslim families in town, and that came with racism, questions, and a lot of loneliness. Books helped. So did music, her brother's comics, and the kind of fantasy novels that make a kid feel less stuck.
She did not take the straight road to becoming a novelist.
After UCLA, Tahir worked as a copy editor on the international desk at The Washington Post. Reading news about disappeared Kashmiri men and boys sparked the question that became An Ember in the Ashes: what would you risk to save someone you love? She wrote the book while working nights, then spent years revising it before it found a home.
That first novel introduced Laia, a Scholar girl forced into danger, and Elias, a soldier trained by a brutal empire he wants to escape. The series grew into A Torch Against the Night, A Reaper at the Gates, and A Sky Beyond the Storm, widening from a prison break and rebellion into a story about power, grief, faith, and how people survive systems built to crush them.
Readers often come for the pace and the danger, then stay for the choices. Tahir is good at trapping characters between bad options and letting them earn their courage slowly. Her worlds have battles and monsters, but the hardest fights are often about family, loyalty, guilt, and hope.
Then she turned inward.
All My Rage moved from fantasy to contemporary YA, following Noor and Salahudin in a small California desert town while also looking back to Misbah's life in Pakistan. The motel, the desert, addiction, faith, racism, old hurt, and fierce friendship all sit close to the page. The book won the National Book Award for Young People's Literature, the Michael L. Printz Award, and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Fiction and Poetry.
Tahir returned to the Ember world with the graphic novel prequels A Thief Among the Trees and A Spark Within the Forge, made with Nicole Andelfinger and Sonia Liao, and with Heir, a next-generation fantasy set years after the original quartet. Across these books, she keeps circling questions that feel simple until you have to live them: Who gets power? Who pays for it? What do we owe the people we love?
She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her family. In public bios, she still claims indie rock, nerdy things, and socks loud enough to be noticed, which feels right for someone who writes about dark times without giving up on small sparks.
